The following is an excerpt from my book, Chosen For Such A Time As This. Available here for purchase on Amazon.
“As a face is reflected in water, so the heart reflects the real person.”
Proverbs 27:19 (NLT)
Every now and then, I go through boxes and containers, getting rid of old things that I don’t need anymore. And so often, I have such a hard time letting go of some things that have absolutely no use. “Well I’ve had this since I was 6, I can’t give this away.” Or, “so-and-so gave me this. I never use it but it’s still special.” And, “What if I need these notes from my high school chemistry class? I don’t want to just throw them away.” So I keep them.
All of these things I don’t need are tucked away in boxes that no one ever sees. In the same way, we have so much unnecessary baggage hidden in our hearts and our minds, taking up valuable space. Maybe you notice it and maybe you don’t, but it’s still there. And eventually, the evidence of your baggage will reveal itself.
As hard as we may try to cover up, eventually our true colors will show. The state of your heart is apparent in your words, your behaviors, how you carry yourself, how you treat others, etc. There is beauty in each of us, and there is also work to be done. Be honest with God; ask Him what you are doing that pleases Him and what areas need improvement. Trust Him to lead you, to teach you and to restore you in a way that is encouraging and non-judgmental. Remember, God’s desire is to create in you a clean heart and a right mind.
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
Psalm 139:23-24 (NIV)
