“Fire goes out without wood, and quarrels disappear when gossip stops.”
Proverbs 26:20 (NLT)
During this month of studying Proverbs every day, I have noticed quite a few passages about gossip and rumors. The constant mention leads me to believe it is something God takes very seriously. He cares about all of us and the things we endure. Gossiping is something that causes others intense pain and humiliation (verse 22). Honestly, we can’t bring others to Christ if we are isolating them or speaking negatively of them.
Not only does gossiping hurt others, it also taints your image and makes it harder for people to trust or respect you. I’ve heard many stories from those who’ve felt ostracized at church due to false rumors and judgment from church members. Let’s not be those people. Instead, treat others as you would like to be treated (Luke 6:31).
The condition of your heart is evident in how you treat others. How do your words make others feel? What do your words say about the state of your heart? Do the people you hang around have a positive or negative influence on your mindset and behavior?
“As surely as a north wind brings rain, so a gossiping tongue causes anger!”
Proverbs 25:23 (NLT)
